 As a Chinese woman born in the 1990s, I was raised by grandparents and parents who lived through the Cultural Revolution and the one-child policy. During my formative years, the social panic left over from the Cultural Revolution made family and schooling enforced the denying of cultural identity. Besides, as the single child of my family, I was burdened with the dual demands of my parents, i.e. the expectation that I could take on the masculine mission of honoring my family as being competitive and successful; and holding the generally accepted feminine qualities of being obedient to my parents’ demands for making life choices in line with common expectations. 
This made it impossible for me to build a cultural identity or a self-identity for a long time.

Once I turned 20, my family and society highly emphasized my reproductive value as a woman whilst denying me equal social competitiveness as men. I was further deprived of the space to construct my personal identity. 

Through this work, I express the situation of women in a Chinese social context. Inspired by the code printed on the eggs in German supermarkets, the red code describes the survival of an egg-producing hen and thus its economic value. It is elaborated as follows:

0: Code for type of husbandry 
0 = Organic husbandry 
1 = free range 
2 = floor husbandry 
3 = intensive rearing 

DE: Country code for country of origin 

1234501: house number of the farm 

My invented code follows the same roll, only at the end I add XX to present I am a biological female.
